Everything to Know About 2025 Shopping Tax-Free Opportunities

By August 1, 2025No Comments

As families gear up for a new school year, both Maryland and Virginia are offering tax-free shopping events to help ease the cost of back-to-school expenses. Maryland’s Tax-Free Week runs Sunday, August 10 through Saturday, August 16, while Virgina will hold its Tax-Free Weekend Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 3.

During this week in Maryland, shoppers can purchase eligible clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item without paying Maryland’s 6% sales tax. Eligible items include sweaters, shirts, jeans, dresses, shoes, and boots. Additionally, the first $40 of a backpack/bookbag purchase will be tax-exempt. Please note that accessories (like jewelry) and other school supplies (like binders and notebooks) are not included in this tax-free incentive.

Virginia’s Tax-Free Weekend offers valuable savings for back-to-school shoppers, allowing them to purchase qualified school supplies priced at $20 or less per item, as well as clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item, without paying state sales tax. This three-day tax break is the perfect opportunity to stock up on classroom essentials and everyday apparel-all without the added cost of sales tax.
